Why Go Solar?

  • Reduce our dependence on oil imports
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions (CO2)
  • Hedge against fuel cost increases
  • Lower monthly electric bills
  • Save our land and environment
  • Financial Incentives (see below)

Investment Tax Credit (ITC)

Claim the Federal Tax Credit on your taxes.  The IRS allows up to $2000 credit (not a deduction) on your taxes.  The ITC is like cash in your pocket at tax time.  Make the investment now!

 Rebates and Renewable Energy Credits

The best incentive to install a solar electric system now is the rebate and Credit (REC) from Xcel Energy.  We can install a small (<10 kilowatt) system and recover approximately 50 percent of the initial cost.  If the system meets all the requirements of the Solar Rebate Program, Xcel will send a check amounting to $4.50 per installed watt.  A 2000 watt system will receive a rebate and REC of $9000.  see details about the Solar Rebate Program at the Xcel website— www.xcelenergy.com

Net Metering

Another significant incentive to install a small solar electric system is the net metering agreement with your utility.  Amendment 37 inspired electric utilities to provide net metering interconnections for small wind and solar energy systems (less than 10 kW).  Net metering allows the solar system to connect to the utility and store or sell excess energy.  The utility acts as a storage battery for your excess energy generated during the day. That excess energy is used later when the sun is not shining!  You save 8.562 cents per kilowatt hour (rates vary by season and market conditions).  Xcel records excess energy each month and sends you a check at the end of the year for the accumulated excess energy!

What does it cost?

The installed cost for a solar electric system is $9 to $10 per watt.  A 2000 watt system will cost $18,000 to $20,000 before incentives.  Your cost after incentives is $7,000 to $9,000.  You can save over half of the cost of a solar electric system if you act now.  The rebates and credits will not be offered indefinitely.

When will the system pay for itself?

Payback is dependent on the future cost of electricity.  With a modest increase in electric rates over the next 20 years, the system will pay for itself in 15 to 20 years.  Sunnyside Solar will calculate your savings at various electric rates and design a system for your needs that will maximize returns and minimize the payback period.
